He kindly accepted to answer a few questions. Here’s the interview.
Can you introduce yourself?
Hi, my name is JAE KIM and I’m a 21-year-old living in Canada. I currently make music, stream on Twitch, and make YouTube videos so if you’d like to check me out on those platforms as well that would be great 🙂
When did you start singing?
I started singing around the age of 10, and it was mostly just for fun in the comfort of my own home.
What made you want to go from an audience of family and friends to a wider audience?
I think I just wanted to make and create music that is more personal to myself. There’s just something about listening to a song that is entirely your voice (rather than just singing a cover of another artist’s song) that’s really fulfilling. I also really enjoy seeing the reactions of my friends, as well as my followers online since it makes me feel nice, haha!
Are all of your songs based on your personal experiences?
I would say that everything I write is based (to a degree) on my personal experiences but I wouldn’t say that my music is written from an extremely personal point of view, but rather a more general one that’s applicable to a wide variety of life situations that many people can relate to. For example, Waiting in the Summer Rain is a song about how it feels like to feel like the second option, and while the lyrics have a more romantic connotation, I wrote that song with the general idea of “relationships” in mind. I thought that the feeling of feeling like “the second choice” was something that a lot of people (myself included) could relate to both on a platonic and romantic level! Hope that made sense haha!
How would you describe your music?
I think I would describe my music as a bit more of an upbeat, Krnb lofi vibe. I wouldn’t say it’s as laid-back or chill as the lofi genre, but I think it has a lot of influences from lofi and is on the calmer side in comparison to a lot of Krnb songs I’ve seen. But I wouldn’t like to restrict myself to a type of music — I’m currently working on other songs that are a much more different sound than my other songs, so please look forward to that too!
What are your musical influences and dream collab?
My musical influences are mostly krnb based. I’d say a lot of my inspiration comes from artists such as Lee Hi, Baekhyun, Crush, and Dean. I’d say my dream collabs (if possible one day) would be with Eric Nam, keshi, or eaJ!
Your two latest songs have English and Korean lyrics. Was it a deliberate choice, or was it inspiration that led you to write in Korean?
Those were both deliberate choices. When I was writing the demos for my songs, a lot of the mumbling that got recorded in the demo just naturally came out in Korean, and after actually sitting down and writing the lyrics, I just felt like a lot of the imagery and meaning behind those songs would get translated a lot better in Korean and English rather than strictly one or the other.
You made an apparition on the web series TOPLINE. Do you plan to start an acting career in parallel with your musical activities?
I appear in Episode 3, and I play the role of a K-pop idol who leaves his group to go solo! As for an acting career, I don’t have any concrete plans to start one, I think the opportunity with TOPLINE is just one that I got very lucky with and thought I would just try out. However, I would definitely be more open to opportunities in the future!
You released in june two weeks ago, but what else can we expect from you this year?
I think you can expect a lot from me this year, both in terms of music and social media (YouTube, Twitch, etc.). I’m currently working on an EP right now and hoping to release it soon, and I’m always working on videos to upload on social media to show a more personal side of myself.
Thanks again Jae for taking the time! 🙏🙏🙏
